Art Documentation was a success!

Sunday, Jan. 30, was the first Art Documentation Day at Spudnik Press. It was definitely a long day, but rewarding as well. One thing that was fun that I didn’t expect was getting to see some work outside the field of print media. Thanks Maureen for making it happen! And thanks to everyone who participated.

We hope to do this again down the road.

New Chicago Comics

A few weeks ago, the New Chicago Comics show opened at the MCA. Included in the exhibit was work by Lilli Carré that was made here at Spudnik Press through our Residency Program. We were ecstatic to have work done at our community press represented at the Museum of Contemporary Art. If you missed the show, Thea Liberty Nichols wrote a review of the show for ArtSlant that includes highlighted images from the exhibit.

Cocktails provided by Hornswaggler.

Spudnik Press invites you to attend our annual Hashbrown fundraiser. On February 26th, Spudnik Press is hosting a festive one-of-a-kind Chili Cook-off to garner funds and support for their new Space Race initiative: an epic mission to expand the boundaries of community printmaking.

The Hashbrown Chili Cook-off will feature vegetarian and meat filled chili provided by members of Chicago’s printmaking community. Representatives from One Horse Press, Screwball, The Post Family, Hummingbird Press, Rar Rar Press, Ork Posters, Spudnik Press, and Anchor Graphics, as well as Jetsah (Dan Grezca) and the student printshops at Columbia College, SAIC, and Harold Washington College will all vie for the title of chili royalty while helping support Spudnik’s efforts to expand into a new studio space. Artwork created through the Residency Program, Publishing Program, and collaborative projects will be on display. This artwork will be available for purchase, as well as the introduction of our brand new subscription program. The first 50 guests will receive a complimentary print.

Through unveiling Space Race, Spudnik hopes to spark unprecedented support for community arts and democratic printmaking. Evolving into a larger space will allow Spudnik to launch two new printing processes: letterpress and offset printing. The cook-off will be held in the future home of Spudnik Press, and attendees will be among the first to see the new equipment and the private studios that will be available in the spring.

Space Race will encompass a variety of projects and events that will all contribute to an ultimate goal of expanding to a larger studio in April 2011.

Art Documentation Day

As part of our Space Race fundraising initiative, photographer Helen Maureen Cooper has offered to donate her equipment, time, and skill to document your artwork.

Slots are available for 12 artists to have up to 30 artworks professionally documented. Artists will leave the studio with a CD of high resolution images that can be used for graduate school and residency applications, websites and online stores, and for endless self-promotion. This is an amazing opportunity to develop a professional portfolio at the exact same time as supporting a favorite community art space.

Slots are available for a $50 donation to Spudnik Press Cooperative.

New Work by Pablo Philipps

At Spudnik, Pablo has long been known for his ability to work small. His etchings, some as small as a few inches across, delicately depict fantasy landscape scenes from a birds eye view, often overlaid with expressive marks as emotional as those of Jim Dine. His new work, while continuing his interest in detail and poignant mark-making, takes a new direction with a monumental change of scale. Two new prints will be on display, both shifting the view-point from a removed spectator to an active participant with his life-size characters. During the artist presentation, Pablo will talk about how his experience at Ox-bow have informed the direction his work is taking.  He is also excited to share how he has adapted to large format printing in regards to materials, tools, and developing an image.

Spring 2011 Residency: Applications due January 5

The deadline to apply for the position of Spudnik Press’ Spring 2011 Resident Artist is quickly approaching. So we encourage you to grab a mug of hot cocoa and flush out exactly how you would spend 3 months in a print shop. The residency comes with a stipend for materials, 24-hour access to the shop, light support from all of us who use the studio, and assistance coordinating an exhibition of your work when it’s all over. Applicants are expected to have printmaking experience and feel comfortable in the medium they applying to work in.

This residency is supported by previous Resident Artists through the sale of their artwork. To this end, at the conclusion of the residency, artwork is divided approximately 50/50 between the artist and Spudnik Press. The artist retains all proofs and unfinished prints.

The application is not too long, a good exercise to help with planning a larger project, and can be downloaded by clicking right here! If you have specific questions, don’t hesitate to write at angee@spudnikpress.com.

Free junk from our home to yours!

About a month ago, we had a big cleaning day and found some under or unused items that the press owns. We posted them to Craigslist, thinking we would make buck AND free up some space in the studio. Alas, most of what we unearthed is still here…

It needs a home!

If you want anything listed above, either stop by the studio and take it home OR send an e-mail, see if we still have it, and set up a time to pick it up. Donations for these items are super appreciated, but not required…

Clockwise from top left:
A. Adapter for a mac. From what to what, I don’t know.
